5th Grade Newsletter
January 18, 2017

Upcoming Activities:
January 25- Civil War Projects due (Mrs. Payne’s class)
January 26- Walking Field Trip, Randall Jones Theater
January 26-  Making Fudge!
January 30-February 3: SEP Week (out at 2:30 daily)

We plan to attend the Shakespeare play, Midsummer Night’s Dream on Thursday, January 26.  We will leave the school at 9:45 AM, and walk to the Randall Jones Theater. We will return to the school at 12:00, in time to eat lunch.  The cost to attend this play is $1.00 per student, which we feel is an awesome deal.
After lunch (January 26) we will be making fudge in a bag. This is a culminating event for our Chemical and Physical Changes unit.  Question: Is this activity a chemical or physical change?  In order to purchase the ingredients, we are asking for $1 from each student. If you feel that you can support these two activities, you can send $2.00 total anytime. If money is a problem, please let us know.  We want your child to participate in both of these events, and we will make sure s/he is covered.
SEP Week is just around the corner.  Please look for a schedule in this packet, and let us know if your time is a good one for you. Bring your child with you so we can register him/her for 6th grade (can you believe it’s time?).  The middle school orchestra and band will put on a concert for our school prior to SEP week, and their goal is to recruit more young musicians for next school year. When you register for 6th grade, you will need to choose between band, orchestra, or art appreciation, so be thinking about that during the next 1-½ weeks. School gets out at 2:30 every day the week of January 30-February 3 (including Wednesday)
We are reading The Adventures of Don Quixote, and preparing to write an essay about this. This essay will address the question, “Do Don Quixote’s good intentions justify his actions?”  Quite a grown up theme for 5th graders!
We are studying the Civil War in Social Studies. (FYI: Mrs. Payne’s Civil War Projects are due January 25 and Mrs. Williams & Mrs. Little’s Civil War TIc-Tac-Toe is due tomorrow). Thank you for helping your child come prepared with math each day. We are almost finished with our chapter on fractions.
Hopefully you have seen the typing practice sheets that are now coming home each week. Please initial the 40 minutes of practice.  Remind your student to use proper typing skills such as, sitting up straight, not looking at hands, and using both hands, all ten fingers. The attached white sheets are due each Wednesday.
Thanks for investing in your child’s education. We love teaching your 5th graders! Please feel free to email with any questions. You will receive your next printout during your conference.
