5th Grade Newsletter        March 28, 2017

Dear Parents,

Our Science Day is the Tuesday after we come back from Easter Break
(April 10).  We still have a few students who have not turned in the Science
Expo form.  Students should be well into their experiment, invention, or
research paper, because this is in a little under two weeks. Parents are
invited to come view projects in our classrooms from 2:30-3:15.  You are
welcome to take your child home at 3:15. It would be inconvenient if your
child leaves earlier, since they will be showing their projects to other parents
and students until 3:15.

Mrs. Bassett will be presenting the dangers of the choking game on
Thursday, April 12.  We already have the permission (or not) slips for this.

We will be going on a field trip to Zion on Tuesday, April 17.  We need a
lunch count by this Friday. We would love to have a few parents come with us.  
Please let us know if you would like to come, and also if you need a school
lunch. We will leave right at 8:50 and return by 3:25.

We will be giving your child a script for the Great American program at
the end of April. Students will need to memorize the short part that each
will be given.  Keep looking for an appropriate costume for your child’s
character. We also need a few instrumental music solos for our program.  
We are needing (hopefully): “Yankee Doodle”, “New York, New York”,
(or another movie tune), “Stars and Stripes Forever”, “Home on The Range”,
“Olympic Fanfare”, and a classical type piece.  If your child would like to do
one of these, have them let us know and we can have him/her audition for
the number. We would like these solos selected before April 20.

Please continue to put reading time on the purple Kite Flight Calendar.  
Student will turn these in on Saturday, April 28, at the CMS soccer field to
receive prizes, and earn money for South Elementary.

We are continuing to learn many new things, so attendance is really important.
 Our testing schedule is listed on the calendar below. Your child will be in the
best situation by taking the test with the whole class at the scheduled times.

For our next Worker’s Holiday, we will swim at the Aquatic Center from 10:00-11:30 AM.
 We need a few parents who can come and help chaperone.  We need you to be willing
to swim, if necessary:)   Students will ride a bus to and from the pool.  In order to rent the
pool, we are collecting $2.00 from each student.  

The Great American Biography forms can be turned in any time, but are due on the
16th.  If your child can’t find a quote, s/he can leave that section blank.  We will help
with that. Our American Hero program will be held in May, but you can begin looking
for a costume now.  We hope you don’t spend a lot of money on this. We have seen
many creative costumes made from inexpensive items.

The Science Expo handouts are coming home today.  Students need to turn in the
top page, with the original science question, by Tues., March 13.

FIFTH GRADE NEWSLETTER FOR

FEBRUARY 21, 2018

Dear Parents,

     Our 5th graders will perform their Famous American program in May.  
Today your child will bring home a list of Famous Americans they can choose from.  
They will dress up as their chosen character and select a quote to say in our program.  
We ask that you go through the list with your students and have them list their top 10
choices, with the first person on their list being their number one choice.  We put all
the students’ names in a hat and call them out one by one.  When their name is called,
they give us their choice for their Famous American.  We will be drawing names on
Friday, March 2nd.  
We will send a report form home with your child once they have chosen their Famous
American.  The students will need to find a couple of quotes from the Famous American
they choose and just a little information on them, as well.  The report will need to be
filled out and a handed back to their teacher by March 16th.

    We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2nd.  The celebration will be a
short, school-wide, read-a-thon, so your child will need to make sure to bring a reading
book
to school that day.

    The final grade printout for third term will be Tuesday, March 6th.  All work for
third term will need to be turned in by Monday, March 12th.  Teachers will need the
missing work given to them first thing Monday morning.  We will be swimming at the
Aquatic
Center on Tues., March 13 for our next Worker’s Holiday.  We are asking for a $2.00
donation for each student that qualifies for Worker’s Holiday.  This is to pay for renting
the pool.  If your child has a pass s/he will not be able to use it on the day of this activity.

    Remember that students will not have school on March 8th and 9th.

Personal note from Mrs. Payne:

This Friday we will begin creating our Circuit Cities for our Current Electricity Unit.  
I need each student to bring 2 or 3 batteries (size C or D).  I have a few that students
can borrow, if you can’t obtain any by Friday.  This is an exciting unit, and I would
love a few parents to come in and help with trouble shooting, stripping wires, etc.  
We will need help  Monday or Tuesday of  next week.  Thanks!      

    

    We would like to make you aware of two excellent online websites available to Iron County students.

1. Utah’s Online Library is available for all K-12 students throughout Utah. Utah’s Online Library provides access to newspaper articles, magazines, professional journals, periodicals, encyclopedia content, animation, audio, videos, photographs, maps, charts, graphics, and more, for homework help, or just for their own enjoyment. This is an Internet resource your student can access wherever he or she has internet access.

       

While we all google to get information, students often come upon sites that are not appropriate or contain inaccurate information. Using Utah’s Online Database eliminates inappropriate sites and avoids advertisements.

2. OverDrive eBooks are available to all Iron County students, grades 3 through 12. OverDrive is a browser-based eBook reader that offers many titles in eBook, audiobook, and read-along book formats. You can check out books 24 hours a day, seven days a week, any place you can access the Internet. Books automatically check in, so they will never be late, overdue or lost.

Then the student enters their student ID number.

We will be discussing these sites with your students. Please talk to them about using these opportunities, provided at no extra cost to you or our school.        You should all have a time scheduled next week for SEP’s, to come in with your child and meet with us. Please contact us if you do not have a time scheduled. School is dismissed each day at 2:30, including Wednesday. The middle school and orchestra will be performing for us next week and will give information to the students about joining band or orchestra next year.  Your child will be registering for 6th grade at our conference and s/he will need to know if s/he wants to take band, orchestra, or be in art/music. Your child will also need to know what instrument s/he will be learning, if in band or orchestra.

North Elementary has a great after school tutoring program for all students in Iron County.  It is free. The hours are M-T-Th from 3:30-5:30 and Wed. 1:30-3:30. This is a great place for kids to go to get extra math help!

We are loving our Chromebooks, thanks to a fabulous PTA.  We are however, short on headphones. The PTA is working on this, but we really need them now.  If you can possibly send in headphones, or earbuds, that your child can leave in his/her desk, it will make the use of our computer time much better. It would be a good idea to put them in a ziplock bag with your child’s name on it. Thank you to those who have already sent them in.

Our Worker’s Holiday will be this Friday, February 2, in the afternoon.  ALL missing work on this printout must be turned in tomorrow, in order to earn the activity. Students must also have an overall score of 80%, or higher, to qualify.  We will be using our computers for some fun activities, as well as playing Bingo.

We have had DARE this year, after not having it for several years. Officer Taylor has been great. We will be having our DARE graduation on Tuesday, February 20 at 2:30 in the gym. Office Taylor will ask two students from each class to read their DARE essay that day. Parents are invited to come.

Your child should have brought home a purple paper to record home reading for the next three months.  This is NOT additional reading.  Just record the same reading on the purple paper as you do the green planner for Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Little.  For Mrs. Payne, you will need to record the time your child reads on this purple sheet, since her students don’t  keep a reading log. This Kite-Flight For Reading is a Lion’s Club program, and they pay us just to have kids read!  The students will be able to get a free book or kite when they turn in the reading paper on Saturday, April 28 at the Cedar Middle School soccer field. PLEASE keep the paper on the fridge, bedroom door, or somewhere it won’t get lost. Our school has earned quite a bit of money from this in the past years.

Students will celebrate Valentine’s Day in their individual classes. Class list will be sent home and those who bring Valentines need to bring one for everyone in class. Each teacher will send information.
