2- Science Expo

Worker’s Holiday will be held at the Aquatic
Center this Thursday,  March 7.   All assignments
must be turned in by Wednesday morning, March 6.
We will ride buses to and from, and will swim from
1-2:30 PM. If any parents would like to help, we could
use four chaperones who are willing to get in the water
with the students.  Please let us know.
Also, we need you to sign the slip giving your child
permission to attend the Worker’s Holiday (providing s/he
has all assignments turned in and has an 80% or above)
and return it by Wed, March 6.  We are asking for a $1.00
donation each to cover the cost of renting the pool. Thanks!

American Heros were selected last Friday. Students were
given a report form to fill out. The reports are due this Friday,
March 8.  We are using that information to write the script for
our 5th grade program held in May, so it is critical to have the
report turned in on time. The music teachers are helping teach
the songs for that program, and the art teacher will be teaching
our students to sketch a portrait of their hero.  It will be an
impressive production.

Science Expo forms included with your information today
are due by Fri. March 15.  Knowing your child’s plans helps us
prepare our classroom for this big event, and it helps your child
prepare ahead ;)  We are eager to see the experiments, inventions,
and research projects our students will be sharing.  Don’t waste
time getting started because most projects take a bit of time to do
well.  Students will be given information in their science classes on
how to set up displays and/or share what they have learned.
The Science Expo itself will be held on Tuesday, April 2
in each 5th grade classroom. Students will be giving a 3-5 minute presentation during the morning in their own classrooms.   Families are
invited to come between 2:45-3:30. Please don’t take  your child
home before 3:30.  Let us know if you have questions.

We are excited to attend the student performance of Newsies
on Monday, March 18.  The cost for this performance is $1.00.
We will be walking to and from the Randall Jones Theater for this
10 AM performance. All students will attend this.

No school next Monday and Tuesday. This is a Teacher
Development day.   Enjoy your family this long weekend and we
will see your child on Wednesday, March 13th.   Please don’t
hesitate to email us with your questions.

  • The first printout for 4th term will be sent on Wed., March 27.

P.S.  Our school web page has just been updated. We are sending a hard copy of our newsletter this time, just in case anyone has trouble logging in.  However, our blogs should be attached to the web page now.

2- Science Expo  (details coming home later)

Congratulations to our Chemistry team: Justin Baird,
Alyssa Ortega, Jake Riddle, Tucker Finch, Haider Khalique.
Ellie Leavitt will stand by as an alternate. They will represent
South Elementary on the afternoon of March 14!

It will cost $1.00 for each student to participate in the Aquatic
Center Worker’s Holiday, and another $1.00 to attend the
Newsies production on March 18th.  Every student will
participate in the field trip to attend the Newsies.  (It’s not a
Worker’s Holiday).

Please watch for the American Hero List to come home.
Each student will choose a hero to represent in our Great Americans
program in May.  We have explained to our students that they will
need to select 10 or so heroes from the list, since our students’ names
will be pulled out of a hat.  Their first (or second) choices may already
be taken. We know this is early in the year, but students will need to
write a report, sketch a portrait (in art class), find a costume, and
memorize a small part.

We’ve added the Science Expo to the calendar above, although it isn’t
until April.  We want students to be thinking about a project. They can
invent something, investigate something, or research something.
We will send a letter home later with details

Students have been taking mid-year assessments in math, science,
writing, and language arts. These tests show us how well each students
is doing and what we need to teach them to help them succeed in 5th grade.

We enjoyed meeting with you at SEPs.  We value your association, communication,
and support, and we enjoy watching these students grow in knowledge and mature
into responsible young people.

5th Grade Newsletter
January 30, 2019
Events Coming Up:

SEP Conferences are coming up next  week. We’re looking
forward to discussing your child’s progress during February 4-8.
School will be dismissed at 2:30 every day, including Wednesday.
It is important for your child to attend the conference with you.
Your child will be registering for Middle School at the conference.
The only decision they need to make is if they will be in band,
orchestra, or art.  Booklets will be sent home this week explaining
band and orchestra and describing the instrument choices.
If  your child chooses band or orchestra s/he will need to already
know which instrument they will be playing, so please discuss
that before your scheduled conference.

Worker’s Holiday will be next Monday afternoon, February 4
for all students who have all missing work turned in by this
Friday, February 1.  They must also have an 80% overall
score and good citizenship.  Students will have a game day.
They should bring games to play with others (Monopoly, Clue,
chess, Apples to Apples, etc.)  There is no wi-fi available for students.

KITE FLIGHT READING calendars(on pink paper) have been
sent home, and the same nightly reading that your children already
complete needs to be written on this calendar for the next 3 months.
When students turn the calendar in at the Kite Flight event at Cedar
Middle School soccer field on Saturday, April 27  they will receive a
kite or a book.  The Lion’s Club then donates money to each school t
hat participates. The schools with the most calendars turned in gets
the most money.  Please help with the very easy way for the PTA
to earn money, by filling in and turning in this calendar.

DARE Graduation is tomorrow, Thursday, January 31 at 2:30.
Parents are invited to attend.

Our school Spelling Bee will be held February 19 (class tests will
be given tomorrow, January 31) and two students from each class
will be selected). Winners on the school level will compete in the Region.
Our school Talent Show will be held March 8. If your child is interested,
s/he can start preparing for that.

One student from each 5th grade class will be selected to compete at
SUU in a  Chemistry Competition. A test was administered to 5th
grade students , and a South Elementary team will be formed. This
team of students will compete at SUU Thursday, March 14.   We are
always thrilled to participate in STEM activities.

No School on Monday, February 18, which is President’s Day.
Your child can get free math tutoring at North Elementary (MTTh at 3:30-5:30,
and W at 1:30-3:30).
The next up-date and grades will be sent on Wed., Feb. 20.  We will be
having our end of 3rd quarter Worker’s Holiday at the Aquatic Center
on March 7. Please help your child stay caught up, so that all students
will be able to attend. It will be a cost of $1.00 for each student (no passes are allowed)
and we will be needing some parents who would be willing to supervise in the water
from 1:00-2:30.

As always, we appreciate your continued support in our efforts to help your child
succeed in school. We value your insights and concerns as we work together in
this important effort.
